Welcome to the GHI’s online survey of North American history and area studies in Europe!

This project seeks to establish a picture of the state of the field in North American history and area studies in Europe today. The database, which is searchable according to a broad range of criteria, serves as a useful resource for both scholars and students seeking to familiarize themselves with the institutional landscape in Europe, providing answers to such questions as: What kind of research is being done and by whom? What types of undergraduate and graduate programs are available? What other kinds of resources are out there?

The survey and database are intended to facilitate and deepen contacts and cooperation among scholars and students in the field throughout Europe, particularly in the newer and non-EU member states, as well as across continental borders.

We encourage you to complete the survey if you are affiliated with a European research or educational institution dealing with North American history and area studies and you are involved in research, teaching, or disseminating information in this field. Since entries are organized according to institutions, not individuals, only one survey per institution is necessary. Even if only one colleague at your department or institution is active in this field, your entry is still of great interest for the project.

Instructions

The survey is divided into the following categories: general information, academic staff, history of institution, current research agenda, publications series, programs of study, scholarships and other awards, events, research facilities (library collections), and "other." You only need to fill out the sections that apply to your institution; if sections do not apply, simply skip over them. In some cases we have provided a sample entry to give you an idea of what is expected. There is also space at the end of the survey to enter any information you would like to convey that does not fit in the allotted spaces.

You will be able to return to your entry at any time by logging in with the "Email address most specific to your institution" (i.e., of the department).

Nota bene: Information entered on each page will only be registered after you click on “Next page”; otherwise, the information will have to be re-entered. Please click on “Done with survey” (under “Other”) when you are finished.

If you should need extra guidance or have further questions while filling out the survey, please feel free to contact the project coordinator at: directory@ghi-dc.org.

Thank you for your interest and your contribution to the project. We very much look forward to receiving your entry and including your institution in the database.
